FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hi-Rez Studios Unveils the Next Tribes ®
ATLANTA - March 11, 2011 -- Today at the PAX East game festival, Hi-Rez Studios released an announcement trailer for Tribes: Ascend™, proclaiming the return of the sci-fi, online multi-player shooter franchise Tribes.

The Tribes collection of games have been played by well over 1 million people.

Tribes: Ascend, developed using the Unreal 3 engine, is being positioned as the multi-player successor to the much lauded Tribes 2 and a re-introduction of the franchise to the gaming world.

Hi-Rez Studios acquired Tribes in October, 2010 and revealed plans to develop a massive scale, persistent world shooter called Tribes Universe. Today's announcement confirms that long-term franchise strategy, but Hi-Rez has chosen to first deliver the single-purchase, digital download Tribes: Ascend this calendar year.

"Before Halo, before Modern Warfare, and before Battlefield, there was Tribes.", says Todd Harris, Hi-Rez Studios COO. "Tribes fans appreciate the game's essence - athletic FPS combat combined with teamwork and strategy. As we began development of Tribes Universe, we focused first on capturing that essence - refining and modernizing iconic elements like jetpacks, skiing, and vehicles. We’ve had tremendous fun play-testing and realized the potential of a multiplayer focused title ahead of Tribes Universe. The community has been waiting for a multi-player shooter that is the modern successor to T2. Tribes: Ascend is that game."

Tribes: Ascend is targeted for release in late 2011 as a digital download on Windows PC and the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft. Additional platforms are currently under consideration as well.

Well, Tribes: Universe is PvP MMO based and was announced a few months ago. It is still planned for release after Tribes: Ascend is out. T:U is the bigger project. T:A will be a traditional tribes fps game focusing on multiplayer aspects. It is most likely to resemble the style of gameplay that T2 Base brought, and may be released for 360 as well.

Yeah, that makes me nervous. I'm not too familiar with the newer unreal engine, but I can't see the physics being anything but limited for a tribes game. I hope it doesn't kill much of the original feel.

T1 physics ftw

But do you think the engine will work well with a "Tribes" game?

they better give it to players that have played the classic for all these years for free. XD lol @ xbox though. you know how retarded it is gonna feel? XD i will bet money they come up with some auto aim system for the 360. people are gonna play that, then try the PC version and get their asses kicked. XD

Tribes Aeriel Assault for PS2 felt weird. I didn't like it. Actually, haven't liked any Tribes but the original

T:V had some interesting physics... I especially like the gravity lift things that replaced elevators, that you can find in almost all versions of Halo too, and the force fields that you can walk through without opening a gaping security whole in your base, etc...

I hated the ceilings though... Even the open air maps had a forcefield ceiling, which kept you from flying as far as you wanted, and made you an easy target. Fucking lame.

After some research and recent testing on this unreal 3 engine, I'm starting to be less concerned.

Quote:
The misconception that people get is that the engine that a game uses dictates the outcome of the product. It's nothing like that at all, it's merely a starting point that developers customize according to their needs.

If there's a shitty buggy product at the end, the accountability ultimately lands on the developers. Irrational games flaked out with T:V because they made terrible design choices, and didn't focus on the MP aspects. It stood up well as a SP game and that's what they're good at. If you had a company like DICE doing Tribes as an MP focused game, I'm sure the outcome would have been much different.
